Jiang Yishen and Qi Lin had known each other for a long time, but the first time they actually spoke was nearly half a year after they had added each other on WeChat.

They were not students from the same college, and at a comprehensive university, not being in the same college was practically as obstructive as being in different provinces. No mutual friends, no group chats or forums to share news through, each of them swallowed up by the crowded cafeteria and teaching buildings.

Adding each other on WeChat had been purely a matter of business. It was during a basketball league held by the school. Qi Lin was a staff member for the opening ceremony, rushing back and forth with a student council badge hanging from his neck. Jiang Yishen was the most unremarkable participant from his department.

Only there were too many coincidences that day. It just so happened that Jiang Yishen was standing at the tail end of his department's lineup, and it just so happened that Qi Lin was carrying a case of water past that spot, and it just so happened that a phone call rang out at that exact moment. Qi Lin stopped beside him, set the water down on the ground, and answered the call.

On the other end, the Minister was saying that the classmate responsible for photography had made a mistake that day and hadn't fully charged the camera, but there were still several speaking occasions coming up that required photos. He was worried phone photos would be subpar, so he wanted Qi Lin to step in and shoot as backup.

Qi Lin agreed. He noticed the idle-looking guy at the back of the lineup watching him, and on a whim asked him to keep an eye on the cases of water for a bit, not to let the team leaders take them, and to wait until he came back to register them one by one.

The guy agreed. By the time Qi Lin and the other staff members finished taking photos, handed off their work, and came rushing back, the cases of water had already vanished without a trace.

The guy said to him, "Senior, the opening ceremony's over and the games are about to start. Waiting around for people to come collect would've been awkward, so I registered them for you while they were taking them. Does that work?"

The guy held up his phone for him to see. On the screen was a memo with neat, line-by-line entries: team leader name, student ID, college, how many cases taken, and in what order.

The guy looked, by stereotype, like someone rough around the edges: short hair, a high nose bridge, sharp eyes, the sort of face that seemed hard to get along with. Yet he was unexpectedly attentive, and had thought everything through with great care.

Qi Lin added him on WeChat. The guy sent him the memo entries he had recorded, and also left his name. He was called Jiang Yishen. Qi Lin thought the name was very easy to say.

Aside from that exchange, they never chatted with each other again.

Qi Lin's work stretched across the entire basketball league, requiring him to coordinate the assignment of referees, though there were no further tasks that required him to be on site. Even so, he would occasionally drop by to join in the excitement, find Jiang Yishen's court from the roster, and watch from the sidelines.

Ordinary university students playing basketball had none of the flashy variety you saw in televised matches, and watching with the naked eye lacked the excitement of a broadcast. Jiang Yishen's technique was above average, though it wasn't as cool or spectacular as one might have imagined. What he had going for him was stamina. By the second half, everyone else had visibly started to flag and was playing with exhaustion, but Jiang Yishen alone maintained the same form he'd had from the start, which made him stand out as particularly impressive.

So that Qi Lin could squeeze to the front without any trouble, he brought his work badge along every time he went to watch, and the moment he stood there, nobody pushed against him at all.

So when the basketball league ended, that light, floating connection dissolved along with it, and they became strangers again, never crossing paths in the vast campus.

Jiang Yishen finished his breakfast. The other roommates came back from outside, and the group gathered around Fan Zi to tease him for a while, worked out a rotation for taking turns keeping him company, and then each went off to do their own thing.

The original plan for today had been to wander around the city together and try their luck. As they walked out of the hospital together, Qi Lin showed Jiang Yishen a page on his phone: a WeChat contact card, which still appeared to be unadded.

"I found the old man from below the temple," he said. "When I went yesterday he wasn't there. I asked a few of the people selling prayer beads by the roadside and got his number."

Jiang Yishen asked, "Has he replied?"

"No. Calling doesn't get a response either. Let's just wait. There's no other option." Qi Lin sighed and stuffed his hand back into his pocket.

"Why are you sure it's connected to this person? Because the wish was unusual?"

Qi Lin glanced at him, pressed his lips together briefly, then said, "The unusual wish is one part of it. Yesterday I noticed that the temporal flow rate near that temple also seems off. "I can also use it to study for one more day." Jiang Yishen finally revealed his true motive. "The exam's tomorrow. Fan Zi gets to defer his exam now that he's in the hospital. It's not like I have to rescue him just so he can sit the exam with me."

"That's your real reason, isn't it." Qi Lin looked at him with an expression of speechless exasperation.

Holding on to their new conjecture about temporal flow rate, the two of them made a special trip back to school. After all, if there was any place that held special significance for them, school was without question number one. Qi Lin watched him leave, then turned back and stared blankly at Fan Zi.

Fan Zi still had his fingers raised, and paused for a moment. "Continue?"

"Yeah." Qi Lin nodded, but a weight had suddenly dropped in his chest. He glanced distractedly toward the door. Fan Zi's words slid right past him, in one ear and out the other, and he retained nothing.
