And the familiar scent was coming from ahead—his cousin, Wu Yu.
From his build, Wu Yu was about 175 cm tall.
At that thought, Luo Fei’s expression tightened. He paused slightly, glanced back at Wu Yu and the man with the “rooster haircut,” then continued walking toward his uncle’s house.
Behind him—
“Who’s that? Your relative?” the rooster-haired youth asked Wu Yu.
Wu Yu curled his lip in disdain. “My aunt’s side—a useless idiot. I used to look down on him. No idea what kind of luck he got, actually becoming a cop.”
“A cop?” The rooster-haired guy instantly tensed.
“What are you scared of?” Wu Yu sneered. “You think he’s going to arrest you or something?”
Luo Fei didn’t go far before arriving at his uncle’s house.
His uncle and aunt were both home. His aunt was cooking in the kitchen, while his uncle was cleaning the yard.
Seeing Luo Fei, Wu Zhiwei smiled warmly. “Xiao Fei, what brings you here?”
“My mom made pickled vegetables. She asked me to bring some over for Aunt and you,” Luo Fei replied with a smile.
But his thoughts were elsewhere—still fixed on what he had just discovered.
A terrifying suspicion had formed in his mind.
Wu Yu might be one of the suspects in the murder case of Tang Youquan.
It wasn’t confirmed yet—he still needed evidence—but Luo Fei felt it was almost certain.
If Wu Yu really was involved in murder… Luo Fei wasn’t sure how his uncle could accept that truth. A faint worry settled in his chest.
“You mom’s pickles are better than anything from the market,” his aunt said as she came out of the kitchen, smiling. “Come in, sit down.”
Now that Luo Fei had become a police officer, his aunt’s attitude toward him had clearly improved. Compared to before, she was far more warm and enthusiastic.
But Luo Fei didn’t have the mind to focus on that.
Taking advantage of when his uncle and aunt went out briefly, Luo Fei slipped into Wu Yu’s room.
First, he checked the shoes under the bed.
He remembered that the forensic team had found a patterned shoe print at the crime scene.
After a quick search, he didn’t find any shoes with that pattern.
As for whether Wu Yu was currently wearing them—when he came earlier, Luo Fei had already observed his shoes. Neither of them matched the patterned sole.
Next, Luo Fei took a bottle cap from the trash bin in Wu Yu’s room.
Then he carefully pulled a few strands of hair from Wu Yu’s pillow.
After politely refusing dinner, he left.
On the way back, Luo Fei hesitated for a moment before decisively calling Director Zhou Weimin.
He told him he had found important clues.
Zhou Weimin immediately asked him to wait at Central Park and said he would come at once.
Luo Fei took a taxi there and waited less than five minutes before Zhou Weimin and Zhang Haiyang arrived.
As soon as they met, Luo Fei explained everything in detail.
After hearing him out—
“Let’s go straight to the Criminal Investigation Team,” Zhou Weimin said immediately.
At the Criminal Investigation Unit, they were in the middle of a special case meeting for the Tang Youquan murder.
Captain Zhao Donglai looked grim.
The investigation had stalled completely.
The fingerprints and DNA collected at the scene had been checked against both databases—no matches.
Officers investigating the victim’s social connections also returned empty-handed. Tang Youquan appeared to have no known enemies and no financial disputes.
In short—the team had no suspect, and no direction.
Just then—
“Captain Zhao, Director Zhou from the station is here. He says they’ve brought new information,” a duty officer reported.
Zhao Donglai immediately stood up and went out.
At the lobby, he saw Zhou Weimin, Luo Fei, and Zhang Haiyang.
“Director Zhou, did you find something?” Zhao Donglai asked urgently. The pressure from above was intense—they were being ordered to solve the case within a deadline.
“Yes,” Zhou Weimin nodded. “Luo Fei has made a major discovery, so I brought him here immediately.”
Zhao Donglai’s gaze sharpened as he looked at Luo Fei.
“Good. We’re in a meeting about the case anyway. Come in and explain everything,” he said, leading them into the conference room.
Inside the conference room—
“Officer Yang Mei, Sister Yang, someone just said Director Zhou brought new information. Could it be related to the case?” Wu Xiaoyue whispered.
“I hope so,” Yang Mei replied. “We currently have no direction. If nothing changes, meeting the deadline will be difficult.”
At that moment, Zhao Donglai entered, followed by Zhou Weimin, Luo Fei, and Zhang Haiyang.
“Quiet down,” Zhao Donglai said. “Officers from Songxin Town Station have brought new clues. Let him explain.”
He gestured for Luo Fei to step forward.
Luo Fei didn’t hesitate. He walked up and calmly explained everything he had discovered.
After he finished—
“Luo Fei, where are the bottle cap and the hair?” Zhao Donglai asked immediately.
Luo Fei carefully took them out, wrapped in tissue paper.
“Yang Mei, Wu Xiaoyue,” Zhao Donglai ordered, “take these items for fingerprint and DNA analysis. Compare them with the evidence from the crime scene. I want results by tomorrow noon. Can you do it?”
“Yes, sir!”
“Yes, sir!”
Then Zhao Donglai turned to a short-haired officer.
“Yang Su, take a team and secretly monitor Wu Yu. Check who he interacts with, but do not alert him. Most importantly—before the DNA and fingerprint results come back, do not let him leave.”
“Understood, Captain Zhao. Mission guaranteed.”
With the case finally showing progress, everyone’s morale rose sharply.
Luo Fei returned home after 7 p.m.
“Why did you take so long? Dinner’s ready,” his mother Wu Yan complained lightly as he walked in, calling the others to eat.
Looking at her, Luo Fei thought again of his uncle Wu Zhiwei.
If Wu Yu was arrested and convicted, it would be his own doing.
He didn’t know how his mother or uncle would react when they learned he personally helped send Wu Yu to prison.
But he didn’t regret it.
He was a police officer.
Protecting the people and maintaining order was his duty.
Anyone who broke the law—no matter who it was—had to be arrested.
With that thought firmly settled, Luo Fei quietly sat down to eat.
