UD | Chapter 10 – Is There Something Wrong With This Girl’s Head?
by North_SkyRong Leying spent June and July living under the Rong family’s roof. During that time, Rong Siyuan had tormented her in every way imaginable—slipping laxatives into her food, tossing dead rats into her room, releasing venomous snakes, installing hidden cameras, and countless other pranks designed to make her miserable.
The dead rats and snakes didn’t bother Rong Leying much. Growing up in the countryside, she was practically immune to those sorts of scares.
As for the laxatives?
Honestly, she should have thanked him.
They successfully solved a constipation problem she’d been struggling with for days.
That night, she had even left both her bedroom door and the bathroom door wide open. The smell drifted through the hallway so badly that Rong Siyuan nearly threw up when he passed by.
The hidden cameras were another story.
Thanks to reading way too many true-heiress-versus-fake-heiress novels, she had once spent a ridiculous amount of money on a hidden-camera detector.
To her surprise, she actually ended up needing it.
After finding the cameras, she promptly sold them secondhand online and made a tidy profit.
Everything else?
Her absurdly good luck had somehow helped her avoid the worst outcomes.
As for Rong Sinan, she was the only genuinely innocent person in the house.
None of those cliché novel scenarios had happened—no being forced into a maid’s room, no fighting over bedrooms, clothes, or jewelry.
Zhang Yan’s methods were subtler.
She preferred smiling sweetly in public while undermining Rong Leying behind the scenes, gradually turning Rong Mingda against her until he found fault with everything she did and constantly played the role of the stern father.
Rong Leying had ignored it all.
Like background noise.
To help the police solve the case faster, she explained everything in great detail.
Li Yingzhe and Tang Chengyun both felt sorry for her.
And yet…
They also wanted to laugh.
Tang Chengyun coughed lightly.
“Anything else?”
Rong Leying thought for a moment.
“Oh, right. I went back to the Rong family home today and got into a fight with them.”
Li Yingzhe immediately perked up.
“Tell us everything.”
So Rong Leying recounted the entire confrontation.
She left out the part about seeing her mother’s ghost but included everything else—especially the section where she verbally demolished the family.
In the process, she basically insulted them all over again.
By the time she finished, she felt wonderfully refreshed.
Then she summarized:
“I don’t think Zhang Yan was behind my grandfather’s accident. Her reaction seemed genuinely surprised when she heard about it.”
“My guess is Rong Siyuan.”
Li Yingzhe gave her a thumbs-up while struggling not to laugh.
“You’re impressive, kid.”
Even Tang Chengyun’s normally serious face showed a trace of amusement.
“Thank you for your cooperation.”
“If anything new comes up, we’ll contact you.”
“Okay.”
“Thank you, Officers.”
“You’ve worked hard.”
“Just doing our job.”
Li Yingzhe nearly burst out laughing again.
Then Rong Leying suddenly remembered something.
“Oh, right.”
“Can you tell me where Bao Laosi died?”
Tang Chengyun frowned.
“What do you need that for?”
Rong Leying answered honestly.
“I can see ghosts.”
“I want to visit the place where he died and see if I can find his spirit.”
“Then I can ask who killed him and who hired him to kill me.”
Maybe she could find the truck driver’s ghost.
Then find the taxi driver’s ghost.
And just ask them directly who the mastermind was.
Simple.
Brilliant.
A true genius plan.
“…”
The room instantly fell silent.
Tang Chengyun and Li Yingzhe exchanged a look.
Their expressions gradually shifted into something resembling sympathy.
Poor girl.
There was definitely something wrong with her head.
Then again…
Given everything she’d gone through at such a young age, maybe it wasn’t surprising.
On the drive back, they made a mental note to see if they could arrange psychological counseling for her.
Seeing their reactions, Rong Leying immediately understood.
Yep.
They thought she was crazy.
She wisely chose not to continue the topic.
The last thing she wanted was for them to stop investigating because they thought she was mentally unstable.
Fine.
She’d find the taxi driver’s ghost herself.
Back in the hospital room, there was a new visitor.
A young man stood beside Auntie Wu’s bed.
He wore a blue short-sleeved dress shirt, his hair neatly combed, black-rimmed glasses perched on his nose.
His appearance was average, but his professional smile made him seem approachable.
When Rong Leying entered, he politely nodded.
She found herself glancing his way several times.
Not because of him.
Because of the ghost standing beside him.
That’s right.
Another ghost.
This one looked like a woman in her twenties.
Her face was pale with a faint purple tint.
A long tongue dangled from her mouth.
Her neck twisted unnaturally to one side, revealing dark bruises around her throat.
She wore a bright red dress.
The visual impact was far stronger than most of the ghosts Rong Leying had seen in the hospital.
Did she hang herself?
Suddenly, the ghost noticed her staring.
Its lips moved.
“You can see me…”
Rong Leying immediately looked away and pretended she hadn’t heard a thing.
“Young lady, are you still looking for a place to rent?” Auntie Wu asked.
Rong Leying nodded eagerly.
“Yes! Do you know anywhere affordable that allows short-term rentals?”
“Short-term…” Auntie Wu hesitated.
Her enthusiasm visibly cooled.
Rong Leying wasn’t surprised.
Most landlords disliked short-term tenants.
Still, she explained her situation honestly.
“I only need it for about a month.”
“Something cheap.”
“Preferably close to the hospital.”
“School starts soon, and I’ll move back into the dorm afterward.”
Auntie Wu shook her head.
“I don’t have anything like that.”
“All my apartments require at least a one-year lease.”
“It’s okay.”
“I’ll keep looking.”
Rong Leying returned to her grandfather’s bedside, poured him some water, and sat down.
“What did the police want?” Old Master Rong asked.
“Nothing important.”
“Just some follow-up questions.”
He narrowed his eyes.
If it had only been routine questions, they wouldn’t have talked for so long.
The girl was definitely hiding something.
But with strangers in the room, he chose not to press the issue.
After drinking some water, he closed his eyes to rest.
Rong Leying kept browsing rental listings while monitoring his IV drip.
Meanwhile, Zhao Yong wheeled Auntie Wu out for an examination.
Once they left the room, he spoke quietly.
“Mom, doesn’t Aunt Zhou still have that one-bedroom apartment near the hospital?”
“The one that’s sitting empty?”
“I think she’d be willing to rent it short-term.”
Auntie Wu frowned.
“Someone died in that apartment.”
“How can I recommend that to her?”
Zhao Yong adjusted his glasses.
“But they’re obviously short on money.”
“And if we don’t tell her, how would she know?”
“It’s cheap.”
“The place is nicely renovated.”
“If that incident hadn’t happened, it would’ve been rented out long ago.”
He smiled.
“And you can earn a referral fee.”
Auntie Wu hesitated.
The extra money sounded tempting.
“Fine.”
“I’ll ask Aunt Zhou if it’s still available.”
“You should.”
“Why miss out on easy money?”
Back in the hospital room.
The female ghost hadn’t followed them out.
Instead, she floated directly in front of Rong Leying.
Their faces were less than an inch apart.
Rong Leying could practically feel the cold yin energy radiating from her.
Terrifying.
But she kept her expression perfectly calm and continued scrolling through her phone.
“You can see me.”
The ghost’s voice dripped with resentment.
“I’m Zhao Yong’s victim.”
“He killed me.”
“And you’re next.”
“Rather than letting that scumbag ruin you…”
“I might as well kill you first.”
Her tongue suddenly stretched outward.
Longer.
Longer.
Longer.
Just as it was about to touch Rong Leying’s face—
A burst of golden light erupted from her body.
“AAAAH!”
The ghost was violently blasted backward.
She stared at Rong Leying in horror.
Who is this girl?
Without another word, she turned and vanished.
Only after she disappeared did Rong Leying finally look toward the empty doorway.
She let out a long breath.
Then immediately grabbed her trembling right hand with her left.
Ever since she gained the ability to see ghosts, she’d realized something.
Ghosts couldn’t actually hurt her.
Some kind of invisible protection surrounded her.
But that didn’t stop them from being terrifying.
“Damn it…”
“That scared the life out of me.”
