The system notification sounded heavenly to Luo Fei.

"2,000 Gold Coins. Amazing!"

Excitement flashed across his face. Two thousand gold coins were enough to purchase a powerful new genetic enhancement.

Without hesitation, he opened the Gene Store.

"The African Hyena Endurance Gene looks useful. The Monkey Agility Gene is tempting too. Then there's the Eagle Vision Gene—eagles can supposedly spot rabbits from kilometers away. And the Viper Infrared Sensing Gene…"

Looking at the vast selection of genes available, Luo Fei felt incredibly tempted.

Unfortunately, he only had 2,000 gold coins, which meant he could afford only one gene.

Fortunately, he had already made up his mind.

"Purchase Gorilla Strength Gene."

He chose the strength enhancement.

The events of yesterday's murder case had taught him an important lesson:

Strength mattered.

Originally, he had wanted to purchase the Ant Strength Gene, but its price was far beyond his current budget. As a result, he settled for the next best option—the Gorilla Strength Gene.

Gorillas were renowned for their incredible physical power.

Surely, it wouldn't disappoint.

The moment he gave the command, a warm current enveloped his entire body.

It felt comfortable and soothing.

When the fusion was complete, Luo Fei instantly sensed a dramatic transformation.

The fatigue that had accumulated throughout the day vanished completely.

In its place was an overwhelming sense of explosive power coursing through every muscle.

At that moment, he felt as though he could take on ten opponents at once and knock each one down with a single punch.

Curious, he lifted his shirt.

The skinny physique he had once possessed was gone.

Unable to contain his excitement, Luo Fei immediately decided to test his newfound strength.

Nearby sat a massive boulder.

In the past, moving it would have been impossible.

Now, however, he felt strangely confident.

Stepping forward, he wrapped both arms around the rock, took a deep breath, and lifted.

The next moment, he froze.

The boulder rose effortlessly.

It felt almost weightless.

For the next half hour, Luo Fei wandered around searching for increasingly larger rocks to lift.

One after another, enormous stones were picked up with surprising ease.

He found himself having far more fun than he expected.

By the end of his little experiment, he had confirmed one thing:

His strength had reached an astonishing level, easily comparable to that of a professional strongman.

Moreover, the increase in strength seemed to have improved his overall athleticism as well.

His speed was faster.

His reflexes were sharper.

His body felt more coordinated.

Luo Fei couldn't have been more satisfied with the results.

By the time he returned home, it was already around 8:30 PM, and darkness had begun to settle over the town.

The next morning, his mother was awake before 6:30 AM, preparing breakfast.

"Just luck," Luo Fei replied modestly.

In truth, he wasn't being humble.

Luck had indeed played a major role.

Jiang Xiaoxiao immediately joined the conversation.

"Even if it's luck, that's incredible luck! I'm so jealous. A murder case on your third day? I wonder what kind of reward the station will give you."

Not everyone shared their enthusiasm.

Zhao Le remained silent.

His expression wasn't particularly pleasant.

Before this incident, Zhao Le had always felt a sense of superiority over Luo Fei.

After all, he was a professionally trained police academy graduate.

Luo Fei, on the other hand, had switched careers halfway through life.

Yet now, Luo Fei had helped solve a homicide and capture a murderer almost immediately after joining the force.

His reputation within the station had skyrocketed overnight.

Naturally, Zhao Le found that difficult to accept.

By eight o'clock, most of the station's personnel had arrived.

To Luo Fei's amusement, nearly everyone who entered the office came over to congratulate him.

By 8:30 AM, Station Chief Zhou Weimin summoned him to his office.

When Luo Fei entered, he found Zhang Haiyang already inside.

The chief immediately launched into a lengthy round of praise.

He commended Luo Fei for his sharp observation skills and praised Zhang Haiyang for his experience and leadership.

At the same time, he reminded Luo Fei to stay grounded and continue learning diligently from his mentor.

It was obvious that Zhou Weimin was extremely pleased with how the murder case had been handled.

However, praise wasn't the only reason he had called Luo Fei in.

He also assigned him a formal work report detailing the homicide investigation.

After leaving the chief's office, Luo Fei prepared to begin writing.

Then he suddenly remembered something.

The original reason he and Zhang Haiyang had gone to the apartment complex was to find Zhang Lan's missing cat.

The murder case had completely overshadowed that task.

Just as he was about to ask his mentor about it, Zhang Haiyang approached him.

"The cat's been found," Zhang Haiyang said.

"Zhang Lan called earlier. Apparently it wandered home by itself."

Luo Fei breathed a sigh of relief.

At least the original case had been resolved as well.

The next few days were relatively quiet.

Police station work returned to normal.

If he could acquire the Elephant Memory Gene, Luo Fei was convinced his learning efficiency would improve severalfold.

While Luo Fei focused on studying, the Criminal Investigation Division completed its work on the Gu Youguo murder case.

The case was officially closed.

Gu Youguo had been transferred to the prosecutor's office for prosecution.

The identity of the male victim had also been confirmed.

His name was Wang He, forty-six years old, the Director of Student Affairs at Songxi Middle School.

Detectives conducted extensive interviews at the school.

According to numerous teachers and students, Wang He and Du Jiao had been involved in an affair for quite some time.

In fact, their relationship was considered an open secret throughout the school.
